The Yarra River forms the western and northern boundaries of the inner-city suburb of Port Melbourne, which is located just at the head of Port Phillip. The neighbourhoods of Southern Melbourne & Southbank divide Port Melbourne from the heart of Melbourne, while Albert Park can be found to the east along the harbour.

Originally called Sandridge upon its 1840s settlement, Port Melbourne's growth as a transportation hub was spurred by the gold rush in the area in the 1850s. North of Williamstown Road & west of Todd Road, Port Melbourne still contains sizable industrial and shipping zones.

Other parts of Port Melbourne, especially those closer to the seaside, have experienced urban renewal, making it a hip and expensive neighbourhood with posh high-rises and chic single-family houses today.

Bay Street is Port Melbourne's primary shopping district. This avenue is more than a kilometre long, studded with restaurants, cafes, magnificent old pubs, and stores, and features a palm tree-lined median strip. Originally opened in 1840, the Pier Hotel can be found at the very end of Bay Street, directly across from the shore.

Port Melbourne's beaches are beautiful, with wide stretches of sand and safe bay swimming, which local lifesaving clubs often monitor. Between Station Piers and Pickles Street, Port Melbourne's primary beach is a waterfront pathway surrounded by attractive palm palms.

The 200-meter-long Lagoon Pier is a famous fishing spot in the bay. However, Sandridge Beach, which can be found between Princes Piers & Webb Dock, is a more peaceful residential beach with a foreshore park that features playgrounds, picnic spots, and barbeques.

A Spirit of Tasmania ferry, which transports passengers and vehicles, docks at Station Pier, as do other luxury cruise liners and military boats. Station Pier and the waterfront area are major draws to the Port Melbourne neighbourhood.

There are waterfront cafes and restaurants, bike trails along the coastline, paved plazas, grassy areas, and even a grocery store. Here, you'll find the final stop on the tram line that travels between Port Melbourne and Melbourne's central business district.

An important immigration pier, Princes Pier, served the area to the west and Station Pier and first opened in 1915. This large pier has been renovated into a public park with grassy in the middle to protect the historic gatehouse.

The decking at the pier's end has been removed, revealing the original sculptural support posts.

Pier 35 is located at the intersection of Lorimer Street and the Yarra River. D'Albora Marinas and a seaside restaurant and cafe can be found here. Large ships approach and leave the ports on the other of the river, providing magnificent views of the West Gate Bridge from the riverbank.

A lot of parklands may be found in Port Melbourne. For example, there is a park on Liardet Street called Edwards Park, it was originally built in the early 1900s. There are expansive lawns, vegetable beds, and a playground in addition to the radial paths flanked by massive palm trees.

Just across the street is Lagoon Reserve, a park with natural gardens and a sports oval built on the former site of a lagoon. The Garden City Park is a park in the Beacon Cove neighbourhood, complete with a huge playground, picnic spots, and BBQs, as well as a network of walkways winding through sparsely treed laws.

The white, 26-meter-tall lighthouse, constructed in 1924, is a recognisable feature of this park. It faces the smaller lighthouse in the bay, which serves as a reference point for the geographic centre of the Ports Melbourne Channel. Westgate Park is a vast bush sanctuary with lakes and wetlands in the middle of an industrial region and up against the West Gate Freeway.

Most of the port is in the suburb of West Melbourne and should not be confused with the Melbourne suburb of Port Melbourne, although Webb Dock and Station Pier, parts of the Port of Melbourne, are in Port Melbourne.

Port Melbourne (or Sandridge as it was known until 1884) was a busy port early in the history of Melbourne but declined as a cargo port with the development of the Port of Melbourne in the late 19th century. Both Beacon Cove and Station Pier

Put on your best designer gear and run along the palm-lined promenade that follows the edge of the water at Port Melbourne. Take a detour and go past all the fancy homes built by architects and the towering apartment complexes with views of Port Phillip Bay. Beach Street has many places to eat and drink near the water so that you can rest your weary feet after a long walk.

Enjoy the Spirit of Tasmania ferry's arrival and the arrival of international cruise ships while sharing nibbles and the sea wind at Mr Lawrence or splurging at Waterfront.

    Returning to Bay Street

Put the beach behind you and head to Bay Street. Spend a fortune at trendy stores, hunt for excellent coffee at Balderdash and stock up on all your French cooking essentials at Noisette. Ciao Cielo, an upscale Italian restaurant, will expand your palate.

You can get some great pub fare and foamy beers (artisanal, of course) at the Railway Club Hotel. If you take a small detour west, you may stop in at the cellar door bar of Starward Distillery to keep the good times rolling.

Set up shop on Bay Street.

Bay Street, which runs right through the centre of the area, is lined on both sides with chic eateries, retail stores, spas, and nightclubs. Now that spring has arrived, it's the perfect time to go out and enjoy the weather by going on a shopping spree or visiting various local cafes.

Shoes, the City, Blow Dry Bar, and Hunky Dory (Melbourne's best fish and chips) are just a few of my favourite shopping places.

Relax with some chicken and chips on the sand.

As a summer tradition, eating Chips and Fish on the sand is a must. Soak the sun on your blanket, watch the sailboats race, or wait for the Spirit Tasmania to leave the dock.

If you're looking for a fun destination to spend the day, go no further than Port Melbourne Beach. Gather your pals for a day of beach cricket, soccer, or volleyball with some tunes streaming under your umbrella. My kids and I frequent this place since the bay's calm water is perfect for wading and playing with kites, buckets, and spades.

Have Some of the Best Dessert Burger Ever

Wear your stretchiest pants as you prepare to stuff your face with Long Story Short cafe's unrivalled fairy floss dessert burger. This sinful delicacy is just what the doctor ordered to go with your bowl of porridge and cup of taro coffee.

Across the street from Play Central was one of our favourite Melbourne play centres; you'll find the stylish, contemporary cafe on Crockford Street. Grab a bite to eat at LSE's brunch buffet before taking the kids to the amusement centre across the street, where they'll spend hours (pro-tip: take them there on particularly hot days to get out of the sun; they'll love climbing dodgem cars, the volcano, the mountain, and the mini-city grocery).

    Elegant Dining

There is an abundance of restaurants in Port Melbourne. The bayside setting is perfect for a night on the town, and I've included two of my favourite spots below.

Tenpin is the place to go for authentic Southeast Asian cuisine.

The location on Beach Street makes it ideal for enjoying a meal while watching the sun go down. Tenpin was given its name after the venue owners came across some vintage signage from the Mentone Tenpin Bowling Club and decided to move it to the new location. Amazing Vietnamese, Thai, and Indonesian dishes are the main draws at this popular eatery.

Up next is Corte, a Latino-inspired restaurant. Corte was erected in the 1860s and served as a rustic-chic eatery providing wonderful tapas and a wide variety of beverages. If you visit during the Summer, try to snag a seat at one of the tables in their garden courtyard. We can't think of a better way to spend a warm summer Friday or a girls' night out.

Get in Shape for Summer with a Spinning Class!

It's inaccurate to refer to Bodhi & Ride's cycling class as a "cycle class." Certainly, it does not do it justice. A party is a better description of the event. A flurry of flashing lights and an emphasis on upper body strength will have you almost dancing during this cycling class. Listen to me. Nothing like this has ever happened to you before!

For those searching for their own personal #fitspo moment, this Port Melbourne facility offers cycling, yoga, and meditation. Believe me when I say this is a game-changer in the Melbourne scene; our go-to personal trainer, Pia Therese, says the same thing!

Bodhi & Ride is the place to be whether you're looking for a workout that doubles as a party or a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The journey of your life is promised to you!

Listen To The Old Timey Stories And Hang Out On Sundays.

With a bar on almost every block, Port Melbourne is one of Melbourne's greatest neighbourhoods to enjoy a "Sunday Session." The Local, Prince Alfred and Pier Port Melbourne are my favourites.

Go out the famous bottles artworks on the Pickles Alley apartments before settling in for the day with a beer and a parma.

Although the structure was constructed in the 1890s, the artworks you see today were added in the 1960s, when United Distillers occupied the building and turned its walls into a massive billboard. Fun tidbit for a nerdy visual artist like yourself: these are the biggest marketing sign ever displayed in our state.

We appreciate that the builder has incorporated the old, worn advertisements into the overall aesthetic of the building. It's a great life in a gin bottle, so raise a glass to it!

    Princess Pier

It's no secret that Princes Pier is a popular site for tourists and locals alike to take photos in Melbourne. It's a great spot to see the summer sunset over the harbour or gaze across to the moored Spirit of Tasmania ferry.

You can go fishing or rollerblade around the restored green entrance gatehouse. The pier has been given a new lease on life thanks to the $60 million in repairs, making it a hotspot for summer fun.
